Unbound

Unbound is a bold exploration of liberation, identity and the desire to exist beyond limitation.

At the centre of the work is a striking, mask-like figure whose asymmetrical eyes create an intense and confronting gaze. One eye appears grounded and human, while the other is exaggerated and brightly coloured, suggesting two ways of seeing the world—or perhaps the coexistence of the inner self and the identity presented to society.

The figure is dressed in richly patterned red fabric, introducing a strong connection to heritage and cultural memory. Against this, the surrounding field of black, white, blue, yellow and red is energetic and deliberately raw. Splashes, marks and exposed threads give the work a sense of movement and imperfection, reinforcing the idea that freedom is not necessarily orderly or comfortable.

Above the figure is a stitched, almost wound-like form. It can be interpreted as a symbol of something once constrained or silenced, now opened. The heart at the centre of the figure’s chest introduces another layer: freedom is not simply the absence of restriction, but the freedom to live, feel and express oneself authentically.

The powerful word “FREE” dominates the lower section of the canvas. Its graffiti-like treatment contrasts with the patterned textile and formal figure, bringing the work firmly into a contemporary, urban visual language.

Ultimately, FREE is a statement of emancipation. It asks what it means to break away from expectations, inherited limitations and imposed identities—and to claim the right to define oneself.
