MASK GUARDIAN
NEO-SYMBOLISM
Born out of the soul of the city.
SnowChino, born Ribeiro, is a Johannesburg–based visual artist whose work is rooted in the raw, unfiltered rhythms of everyday life. His paintings are informed by the people he encounters on the streets—faces marked by experience, struggle, joy, and survival.
Working primarily in Neo-Expressionism and Abstract Stencil art, he refers to these lived encounters as the “street library”—a human archive of stories, scars, and identities that shape the visual language of his work.
Most at home in the streets of Johannesburg's Maboneng district, his pieces capture the unmistakable urban energy and the psychological heartbeat of the city.
NEO-SYMBOLISM
"My practice is a form of witnessing. I believe that art aims 'to do,' not just to look. My pieces are bright and robust, designed to give any space a voice and awaken curiosity about the pulse beneath the layers."
"The word 'FREE' is my central philosophy—it's a reminder that we possess the inherent ability to imagine and create our own reality. I prioritize raw emotion over conventional perfection."
"Inspired by Malangatana Ngwenya and mentored by Nkululeko Mahlangu, I strive to turn the city's archive into a symbolic, almost totemic, visual dialogue."
IMPERFECTION IS INTENTIONAL.
"He believes in creating a strong message but without having to attain perfection as result. His pieces are bright and robust, giving any space a voice."
