ARTWORK STATEMENT
FINDING MY VOICEFinding My Voice is a powerful reflection on the journey from silence to healing.
At the center of the composition stands a solitary figure whose mouth has been deliberately closed, symbolizing years of unspoken truths, suppressed emotions, and the invisible wounds created when a voice is ignored, silenced, or taken away. The stitched forms that appear throughout the artwork echo both pain and repair, representing scars that no longer hide trauma but instead tell a story of survival.
The contrasting eyes reveal an internal struggle between what is seen and what is felt. One eye remains guarded and weary, while the other carries the quiet awareness that healing is possible. Above the figure, the stitched halo suggests that recovery is not the absence of wounds, but the transformation of wounds into wisdom. Each stitch becomes a testament to resilience, demonstrating that what was once broken can be mended without erasing its history.
The red heart positioned at the center of the body serves as the emotional anchor of the work. Despite the silenced mouth, the heart remains visible and unhidden, reminding viewers that the truth of who we are often speaks long before words do. The bold declaration of "FREE" across the canvas marks the turning point in the narrative, signifying liberation from fear, judgment, and the weight of carrying untold stories.
Layered with vibrant textures, graffiti-inspired marks, and expressive color, Finding My Voice celebrates the courage required to heal. It is a visual reminder that being silenced is not the end of one's story. True freedom begins when healing replaces shame, when scars become symbols of strength, and when the voice that was once confined finally finds the power to be heard.
